A landmark international review published this past May in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is reshaping decades of debate around prostate cancer screening, concluding that PSA testing likely reduces deaths from prostate cancer.
The review, highlighted by Nature, analyzed data from nearly 800,000 men across international clinical trials. For every 1,000 men screened, PSA testing likely detects 36 additional prostate cancer cases and saves approximately two lives from prostate cancer death.
For the Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC), the findings reinforce the value of informed early detection as part of a comprehensive approach to prostate cancer care.
“Early detection continues to be one of our most important tools in the fight against prostate cancer,” said Jeff Davison, Chief Executive Officer. “This new evidence validates what we’ve long believed: informed PSA screening can save lives, especially when men have access to education, conversations about risk and appropriate follow-up care.”
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men. While some prostate cancers grow slowly, others can be aggressive and life-threatening if not detected early.
At PCC, early detection is only the beginning. The Centre brings together services supporting men and their families through diagnosis, treatment and recovery, including rapid-access clinics, specialist care, prehabilitation to prepare patients physically and emotionally for treatment, mental wellness and support, and post-treatment care for challenges such as incontinence and sexual health.
PCC is also known for its clinical research and trials, giving eligible patients access to innovative therapies while helping advance prostate cancer care. Its research program has completed more than 100 clinical trials and has 30 ongoing studies in 2026, consistently ranking among top recruiting sites in North America.
“These findings reinforce the importance of making informed screening accessible, but screening is just one part of the journey,” said Dr. John Dushinski, Chief Medical Officer. “Our goal is to provide men with the information, specialized care, support and research opportunities they need throughout their prostate cancer experience.”
The PCC emphasizes that PSA testing is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Screening decisions should be made through informed conversations with healthcare providers, considering individual risk factors and personal preferences.
The MAN VAN®, PCC’s mobile men’s health clinic, remains an important outreach program, bringing free PSA testing and men’s health education to communities across Alberta.
